Relative tuning

Relative tuning is a way of tuning the guitar without an electronic tuner or piano. The strings are tuned relative to one another. See guitar tuning for how to do it.

Guitar tuning

You can tune your guitar if you don't have an electronic guitar tuner or piano, if you assume that your sixth string on the guitar is correctly tuned to E. The method below is called relative tuning.

1) Pick the sixth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open fifth string should sound like.
2) Pick the fifth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open fourth string should sound like.
3) Pick the fourth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open third string should sound like.
4) Pick the third string at the 4th fret. This is what the open second string should sound like.
5) Pick the second string at the 5th fret. This is what the open first string should sound like.
