Bass guitar strings in scientific pitch notation
These are the bass guitar strings in scientific pitch notation. The E string (4th string) starts at E1 and the G string (1st string) starts at G2. Middle C on a piano is C4.
Standard tuning
Standard tuning is the most popular tuning on a 6-string guitar. Drop D tuning is another way of tuning, where just the sixth string is tuned different. Each string is tuned to the following with standard tuning:
The first string is E4
The second string is B3
The third string is G3
The fourth string D3
The fifth string is A2
The sixth string is E2

Octave changes on guitar
The notes on a guitar change in octave at the C notes on each string. Listed are the scientific pitch notations through fret 12.
The sixth string starts at the second octave (E2) and changes to the third at the 8th fret.
The fifth string starts at the second octave (A2) and changes to the third at the 3rd fret.
The fourth string starts at the third octave (D3) and changes to the fourth at the 10th fret.
The third string starts at the third octave (G3) and changes to the fourth at the 5th fret.
The second string starts at the third octave (B3) and changes to the fourth at the 1st fret.
The first string starts at the fourth octave (E4) and changes to the fifth at the 8th fret.
Drop D tuning
Drop D tuning is when the sixth string of the guitar is tuned to D2 instead of E2.

Guitar tablature is six horizontal lines forming a staff. Bass guitar tablature has four lines. Each line represents one of the instrument's strings. The top line of the tablature represents the highest-pitched string of the guitar. The lowest line represents the lowest-pitched string.

Relative tuning
Relative tuning is a way of tuning the guitar without an electronic tuner or piano. The strings are tuned relative to one another. See guitar tuning for how to do it.

You can tune your guitar if you don't have an electronic guitar tuner or piano, if you assume that your sixth string on the guitar is correctly tuned to E. The method below is called relative tuning.
1) Pick the sixth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open fifth string should sound like.
2) Pick the fifth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open fourth string should sound like.
3) Pick the fourth string at the 5th fret. This is what the open third string should sound like.
4) Pick the third string at the 4th fret. This is what the open second string should sound like.
5) Pick the second string at the 5th fret. This is what the open first string should sound like.
